Tri-Branch Celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence

The Three Branches of Vermont State Government invite members of the public to "A Celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence" on Wednesday, July 1 in Montpelier. Day-long events and activities include:

  • a Library of Congress “Declaration of Independence Traveling Exhibit” on display in the Vermont Supreme Court Gallery at 111 State Street;
  • a Naturalization Ceremony in the Supreme Court Courtroom with a candidate from each county taking the naturalization oath administered by U.S. District Court Judge Geoffrey Crawford (candidates and invited guests in the courtroom, with livestream component);
  • an Overview of the Declaration of Independence presented by the Vermont Supreme Court Justices at 1 p.m. in the Supreme Court courtroom, with livestream component;
  • Kids’ games and activities on the Supreme Court and the State House lawn areas from 12 - 3 p.m., featuring a dunking booth for King George, potato sack and egg on spoon races, cornhole and other games, Vermont figure costume/look-alike contest, face painting, theme arts and crafts, patriotic popsicles and Kids’ Vote opportunity;
  • a Panel Program about the three branches of government with Justice Nancy Waples, Secretary of State Copeland Hanzas and House Speaker Jill Krowinski in the State House Chamber at 3 p.m., with Governor Scott invited to provide remarks;
  • a preview of the Vermont History Museum’s "50 for 250" artifacts exhibition on display throughout the day at the Vermont History Museum at 109 State Street;
  • showings of the "1776" musical at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at 111 State Street;
  • Tours of the State House and the Vermont History Museum throughout the day;
  • an American and Vermont History Trivia Contest organized by the Vermont Bar Association at 5 p.m. at the Barr Hill Distillery, details are HERE.
